History about cheerleading – before organized cheerleading

During 18th century :

History about cheerleading: Cheerleading began during the 18th century with the rebellion of students.
In the 1860s, students from Great Britain started to cheer and sing in the community. For their favorite players on sporting occasions.

Roots of Cheerleading :

Cheerleading root is connected to American football. In the United States, the intercollegiate football has been played on 6 Nov 1869 for the first time. This sport was played between two teams. And they were Princeton University and Rutgers University. Because of this,  that day is considered the first “Sis Boom Rah!” cheer.  And students roared this cheer.

History about cheerleading – Beginning of organized cheerleading

Cheerleading began as a male activity :

In this paragraph, I am going to tell you about Organized cheerleading began as a male activity. In 1877, Princeton University owned a “Princeton Cheer”.
Firstly, This cheer had shouted from the stands by students. Although the athletes were also shout as well as stands by students.
The cheer, “Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! Tiger! S-s-s-t! Boom! Ahhh!” is getting popular.
And this cheer is still in use with some modifications. Now, that cheer is known as the “Locomotive” or “Locomotive Cheer”.

Lastly, Thomas Peebles Graduate from Princeton in 1882. And he brings Princeton cheer to the football games of the University of Minnesota.

Students as Cheer Leaders :

The title “Cheer Leader” had used in 1897. After that Princeton’s football officials having named three students as Cheer Leaders. And they were Thomas in 1897,
Easton in 1898, and Guerin in 1899. They were from Princeton’s classes, on Oct 26, 1897.

Who invented cheerleading :

Moreover, In 1898 At the University of Minnesota. And a medical student Johnny Campbell directed a mob in cheering. And that cheering song was this
“Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! 3, Minn-e-So-Tah!”. This song made Johnny Campbell the first cheerleader.

Official origin date of organized cheerleading :

2 Nov 1898, is the official origin date of organized cheerleading. Soon after,
the University of Minnesota organized a “yell leader”. Its the team of six male students.
who still use Johnny Campbell’s first cheer today. In 1903, the first cheerleading fellowship was founded. And that was Gamma Sigma.

History about cheerleading – female participation in cheerleading

Females got opportunities in cheerleading :

As well as other schools follow this after a certain time. In the 1920s, many school newspapers,
and manuals still related to cheerleaders. And they relate them as “chap,” “fellow,” and “man”. Because of the World War II on the time.
Therefore all females got opportunities in cheerleading events.

Growth of female participation in cheerleading :

And after that In the 1950s, female participation in cheerleading. After this it continued to grow and by the 1970s.
And it was girls essentially cheering at public school sports.
Most importantly, In 1975, 500,000 students participated in American cheerleading. After that it is from primary school to the collegiate level.
In which 95% of cheerleaders within America were female. As of 2005, overall statistics show around 97% of cheerleading participants are female.

Cheerleading is co-ed :

Although, at the collegiate level. The cheerleading is co-ed with about 50 percent of participants are male. Then finally cheerleading started with the 50 percent of female participants or members. And with 50 percent of male participants or members. It means that cheerleading sport started with the equal contribution. And that contribution of female and male participants.

In the history about cheerleading. There are various facts and up and downs. When the cheerleading started. That was not well organized. And after some time cheerleading started to be well organized. And there are various cheerleading events. Which has been taken place in the history about cheerleading. Although various cheers are still using in the current generation. Firstly cheerleading started with male cheerleaders. Secondly, females started to participate in cheerleading. After that now in cheerleading female and male participants. Finally both are essential for the cheerleading team.
